INVESTIGATION OF BUILD PLATFORM SURFACE DEVIATIONS AND THEIR INFLUENCE ON THE SELECTIVE LASER MELTING PROCESS
(pp. 3-11)

Abstract. A numerical modeling approach is presented for estimating the apparent packing density of AlSi10Mg powder used in laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF), taking into account real deviations of the build platform surface. Surface deviations were measured using structured-light laser scanning, while the particle size distribution of the powder was determined by laser diffraction analysis. A two-dimensional algorithm was developed to simulate powder packing using a particle generator and spatial hashing along the recoating direction. The influence of build platform deviations on the local and average packing density was analyzed, and hypotheses concerning the dependence of mean packing density on surface deviation amplitude and layer thickness were tested. The obtained results confirm the significant effect of surface unevenness on the uniformity of powder distribution and emphasize the necessity of considering these deviations during build platform preparation for the L-PBF process. The proposed method enables quantitative evaluation of the geometrical influence of the platform on the packing density of the deposited layer and can be applied in digital modeling and optimization of powder spreading parameters.

Keywords: Additive manufacturing; L-PBF; AlSi10Mg; Powder packing density; Particle size distribution; Powder bed modeling; Local layer density.
