PASSWORDLESS AUTHENTICATION IN INTELLIGENT POWER GRIDS: COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF SECURITY AND PERFORMANCE
(pp. 47-54)

Abstract. A comparative analysis of two post-password authentication approaches for Smart Grids is conducted: a verifiable encryption with one-time passwords (VE+OTP) scheme and the Passkeys (FIDO2/WebAuthn) standard. The study addresses the high vulnerability of traditional password-based authentication in critical energy infrastructure. A formal threat model combining Dolev-Yao channel model and STRIDE classification is developed to systematically evaluate security properties. A set of quantitative metrics for authentication performance and security is proposed, including latency, CPU load, message size, energy consumption, and resilience to network degradation and infrastructure failures. Experimental measurements are performed on representative hardware platforms: a server (Xeon E5-2670), operator workstation (Core i5), edge gateway (Odroid N2+), and field controller (STM32F407). Three operational scenarios are emulated: normal operation (RTT <5 ms), channel degradation (RTT 100 ms, 3 % packet loss, 50 ms jitter), and high load (100…1000 requests per second). Results show that VE+OTP achieves authentication latency of 2.1 ms (P99) on field controllers under normal conditions and remains operational during network outages using pre-generated key pools, but offers only moderate phishing resistance. Passkeys provides strong phishing resistance through origin binding but requires 88 ms (P99) on operator workstations and becomes unavailable when the identity provider is unreachable. A technology selection map is formulated linking authentication methods to specific Smart Grid roles and device classes: Passkeys for operators and administrators, VE+OTP for edge gateways and field controllers, and hybrid schemes for critical operations. Recommendations for corporate security standards are provided.

Keywords: Authentication; Post-password authentication; Smart Grid; Verifiable encryption; One-time passwords; Passkeys; FIDO2; WebAuthn; Threat model; Cybersecurity.
