ALGORITHM FOR CONTROLLING THE GrANT UAV
(pp. 10-17)

Abstract. The article presents a complete automatic flight control algorithm developed for the small‑sized GrANT unmanned aerial vehicle. The proposed solution governs every phase of operation – from takeoff and en‑route navigation to precision target approach and conventional aircraft‑style landing. Its defining feature is a high‑accuracy trajectory tracking mode, designated automatic chord guidance, activated during landing approach. This mode relies on redundant navigation data streams: a satellite radio navigation system operating in differential mode (GPS/GLONASS) serves as the primary positioning source, while a ground-based technical direction finder provides backup measurements. The control law explicitly incorporates nonlinear aerodynamic characteristics obtained from experimental testing in the T‑102 wind tunnel, particularly the degradation of control surface effectiveness at high angles of attack. Flight trials and real‑time hardware‑in‑the‑loop simulations have validated the system’s performance, demonstrating reliable automatic landing with lateral dispersion within five meters and vertical velocity errors below 0.5 m/s at touchdown. Navigation source switching during simulated GNSS outages occurs seamlessly with trajectory recovery times under two seconds. By integrating redundant measurement channels, experimental aerodynamic data, and an adaptive control structure, the algorithm ensures robust operation under limited ground infrastructure and maintains required accuracy for tactical reconnaissance and aerial survey missions.

Keywords: Unmanned aerial vehicle; Control algorithm; Automatic control system; Aircraft-style landing; Navigation channel redundancy; Differential SRNS mode; Aerodynamic characteristics.
