CONTEXT-AWАRE SERVICES BASED ON WIRELESS TAGS
(pp. 18-22)

Abstract. The article discusses the development of context-aware services based on the use of wireless tags. As a fundamentally new feature, we suggest using the existing wireless network nodes as wireless tags. In particular, our model uses Wi-Fi access points and mobile phones with Bluetooth. For Bluetooth devices, our model proposes a new deployment model for context-aware services. Also, it is a new application model for Core Bluetooth systems. In our model, any device with Bluetooth support can act as a tag with some user-defined data being associated with. Such a tag can reveal associated data to mobile users in proximity. As a proximity measurement (as a main context characteristic) we use network proximity. As a mobile tag in our model, we can use an ordinary smartphone. This feature lets us describe our tags a moveable. For moveable tags, user-defined data snippets associated with this tag will “follow” him too. In order to validate our model, we propose a mobile application for Android platform. This application supports all phases for context-aware services based on network proximity: data definition, data publishing and data access. The possible use cases include indoor based information systems (e.g., retail, proximity marketing) as well as applications for Smart Cities.

Keywords: Context-aware services; Bluetooth; Wireless tags; Network proximity.
