METHOD OF COMPUTING THE INTENSITY OF SCATTERED LIGHT AND FOG USING GRAPHICS PROCESSING UNITS
(pp. 35-38)

Abstract. In proposed lighting model, the sky, fog, and 3D-objects on the ground reflecting light from the sun can fit together. A lighting model that takes into account the effects of scattering light is presented. The model for rendering fog is considered. The cost of computing a scene is not small. A method of reducing the cost of the algorithm was proposed. As well were restricted the geometry and applied certain approximations that allowed the computation to be performed in a real time on a graphics processing unit. The vertex shaders compute the light reaching the eye from a source or a reflective object and fog component. The inputs to the vertex shader are vertex position, transformation matrices, sunlight intensity, the sun direction, the various extinction and scattering coefficients. In this implementation using calculate them pervertex in a vertex shader. This approach makes good use of modern hardware capabilities and should work reasonably well even on older hardware with software vertex processing. These techniques have modeled effectively the interaction of light with surfaces in the environment. Because is not sufficient to assume that light is traveling in a vacuum between surfaces. Where there are large amounts of dust and water vapor in the atmosphere, traditional ray tracing is ineffective. New techniques have modeled more and more effectively the interaction of light with surfaces in the environment, using the principles of ray optics.

Keywords: Image synthesis; Scattered light; Fog; Graphics processing unit; Vertex shader.
