OPTIMIZATION METHODS OF HIGH-PRECISION OBJECT ORIENTATION ON IMAGES FOR MACHINE VISION SYSTEMS
(pp. 29-34)

Abstract. The paper proposes methods for high-precision orientation of flat objects on images. Methods were developed specifically to create a machine vision system, which control water jet cutter. The system detects, recognize and determine rotation angle and shift of the object relative to the sample image. The main feature of the task is the need to handle poor textured objects of irregular shape. To solve the orientation problem two dualistic optimization approaches were presented. The first one is based on iterative estimation of optimal shift parameters and subsequent calculation of rotation angle. The second is based on iterative estimation of optimal angle and subsequent calculation shift parameters. The optimized cost functional is the cross-correlation between object and stored reference image. During the optimization procedure the quality is iteratively evaluated and the next point in the parameter space of orientation is chosen. Nelder–Mead method and Brent method are used for optimization. The initial estimation of rotation angle was made by comparing the histograms of gradients. The advantage of methods is that they are based on the object texture, not its boundary or interest points. Due to higher informativity and robustness of texture, methods are resistant to various image distortions, such as perspective distortion, glare, shadows, noise. Modelling results shows that developed algorithms enable to achieve high precision of object orientation estimation. That makes it possible to create high-accuracy industrial systems based on proposes approaches.
