OBJECT RECOGNITION ALGORITHMS TO BE USED IN THE UAV TECHNICAL VISION SYSTEMS TO RECOGNIZE OBJECTS ON IMAGES OF GROUND SCENES
(pp. 25-32)

Abstract. Recognition process structure is considered for recognition of large anthropogenic objects that are part of terrestrial scenes using images of these scenes obtained by electro-optical systems onboard of unmanned aerial vehicles. The possibility of recognition of three-dimensional objects by their two-dimensional images is considered. The scenes that contain large infrastructural objects and objects of industrial-urban development are of most interest. These objects and scenes include buildings, pipes and cooling towers of thermal power stations, major buildings, airports, industrial zones, etc. The proposed recognition procedure consists of two main steps: construction of the scene etalon and the scene objects etalons; recognition of objects in the image of scene. The first phase is an informative features selection for object to be recognized and a reference description construction for each object. It is suggested to use information about straightline segments of an object edges as an reference description of object. The second stage is stage where the process of object recognition is implemented. This process begins from procedure of edge detection on the current image. Two object recognition algorithms are considered that use geometric features of objects in terms of their edges. The first algorithm is based on calculation of likelihood ratios for all pixels of the region of the possible location of the object etalon on the current image of the scene. The second algorithm is based on the use of so-called “distant” representation of the current image. The term “distant” refers to an image in which each pixel has a value equal to the distance from this pixel to the nearest contour pixel of the reference image. The proposed algorithms results are shown on example of a real multi-object industrial scene. The analysis of accuracy and performance characteristics of the recognition procedure using proposed algorithms was fulfilled.
