РАRAMETRIC REPRESENTATION ОF BINARY IMAGE SKELETON RADIAL FUNCTION FOR SHAPE MATCHING PROBLEM
(pp. 3-12)

Abstract. New approaches to parametric description of skeleton radial function for the shape matching problem are proposed. The target shape matching technique is based on alignment of skeleton primitive chains. It is shown that there is a problem in classification of some shapes if only skeleton topology without skeleton radial function is taken into account. The skeleton radial function is a main characteristic of the shape width. Two ways of its parameterization are offered in this paper: the first is to consider values of radial function just in the vertices of the skeleton ribs, and the second is to interpolate the skeleton radial function of each rib and describe it by the vector of Legendre polynomial coefficients. The second way is more appropriate in most cases because it is precise and versatile. Parametric radial function representation can be utilized as a shape descriptor for the binary images with equal skeleton topology but different width characteristics. Thus, the resulting shape representation includes not only topological properties but also the contour ones. It is offered to expand a previously developed shape matching procedure based on alignment of skeleton primitive chains with the parametrical description of skeleton radial function. The expanded matching procedure is evaluated on the Flavia leaf dataset.

Keywords: Binary image; Shape matching; Skeleton; Chain of primitives; Pairwise comparison function; Skeleton radial function; Legendre polynomials.
