THERMOOPTICAL BIOMETRIC AUTHENTICATION METHOD WITH ENHANCED RESISTANCE TO PRESENTATION ATTACKS
(pp. 10-18)

Abstract. This paper addresses the problem of face authentication with simultaneous detection of presentation attacks, which remains a critical challenge for practical biometric systems. Although modern face recognition methods based on deep neural networks demonstrate high accuracy under controlled conditions, their vulnerability to presentation attacks, including printed photo-graphs, video replays, and artificial facial representations, significantly limits their applicability in real-world scenarios. To address this issue, presentation attack detection techniques are commonly integrated into face authentication systems; however, in many existing approaches such techniques are implemented as independent classifiers that are weakly coupled with the identity recognition process. The method is evaluated in a multisensor biometric setting using facial images acquired in the visible light and thermal infrared spectral ranges. Thermal infrared information provides additional cues related to physiological and physical properties of the presented face, which are difficult to replicate in spoofing scenarios. The analysis of consistency between optical and thermal facial representations enables improved discrimination between bona fide presentations and presentation attacks. Experimental evaluation is conducted using a subject-disjoint protocol in accordance with the recommendations of the international standard ISO/IEC 30107-3. System performance is assessed using standard error metrics for presentation attack detection and face authentication, including the attack presentation classification error rate, the bona fide presentation classification error rate, the average classification error rate, and the equal error rate. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed CanonFace-PAD method achieves lower error rates compared to a baseline embedding-based face authentication system combined with a conventional presentation attack detection module, particularly in scenarios involving complex and previously unseen attack types. The obtained results confirm that a structured analysis of identity-related and presentation-related factors constitutes an effective and practical approach for enhancing the robustness of face authentication systems against presentation attacks, especially in multispectral biometric applications.

Keywords: Presentation attack detection; Multisensor authentication; Thermal and optical data; Error metrics.
