EARTH SURFACE MONITORING USING UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLES
(pp. 25-30)

Abstract. A technique for on-line processing of the earth surface images from UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) camera is developed. This tech-nique provides accurate and actual data for surface monitoring, change detection and object detection. The developed procedure for images from UAV processing supposes that digital elevation model (DEM) of earth surface is given. The al-gorithm  includes several steps such as UAV camera calibration, exterior coordinate system determination, image exterior orientation and image orthotransformation. The first step is preliminary UAV camera calibration for distortions identification and compensation. Then exterior system of coordinates is determined using a set of reference points on the earth surface. This set of reference points is the result of image feature detection by SURF algorithm. After UAV  image exterior orientation its orthotransformation is performed basing on known DEM. A set of algorithms is developed which supports all stages of UAV image processing, such as: automatic selection and matching of reference points in the acquired image and old orthophotoplan, image orientation basing on detected reference points and image orthotransformation and positioning in given system of coordinates. The original software is developed for algorithms testing and evaluation. The results of algorithms evaluation on model and real UAV images showed its high accuracy and robustness.

Keywords: Unmanned aerial vehicle; Earth surface monitoring; Orthophotoplan; Orientation; Parameters estimation.
